Oasis

Well, despite the busy week with the mid-term exams and all, here a song entitled Oasis, composed by Kotaro Oshio. It's a beautiful song that I hope will relieve all that stress and regret (For not studying hard enough for the Marketing paper... zzz).

Took me quite a while to learn the song because it's played in an alternate tuning. Also, I practiced 2 different versions, one with harmonic slaps and the other without. The video below is the simplified version without most of the harmonic slaps because it simply can't be heard clearly on a classical guitar. Tabs are indicated below for those (YouTube user: ipponsionagejop) interested. Also, I summarised the strumming parts into one-chorded tabs for simplicity. Enjoy! =P

Also, as requested by some users, here's an instructional video on how to play the song. Hope it helps.

problem for sound....

hi, how do u tune F# on 3 string? please respond

Graham Choo said...

The 3rd string when standardly tuned is a G. Just drop it by a semi-tone to make it F#. You can get your gauge for an F# sound by pressing the 1st string on the 2nd fret. That's an F# sound, which your 3rd string should be downtuned to sound like. Hope it helps

Hey graham.. firstly thanks for instructional video and tabs.. means alot to us newbies :D

may i ask for instructional video... around 3:42-3:44(just picked this as an example) when you strum, do you just use your thumb for the down strum and up-wards strum? or thumb for down strum and index for up strum?

just havent really gotten the hang of strumming with fingers versus pick, although fingerpicking i'm slowly getting the hang(i'm a 100% self learner unfortunatley, too poor for lessons) :D hit back here if you read this , appreciate it! keep up the guitar work! =)

Hi Waz,

I actually use my thumb just for the plucking parts, when I have to hit a bass note, and my index finger for the strumming of the rest of my strings.

Regarding that portion from 3:42-3:44, I use by index from strumming both the up and down strum. I happen to place by thumb with my index when I strum, but I'm actually just using my index finger :)

Hope that explanation helps you learn the song without much complications :)

is the D string tuned downward or up to E?

Graham Choo said...

Hey jdguy3490, it's tuned upward from D to E. Alternate tuning tries to make the least change from note to note. So if you're changing from F to A for example, you tune it up since it's only 2 tones away, and not down, since it's 5 tones away :)

ahh. i got it. i'm pretty hesitant about tuning my strings upward. i have bad luck with it. hahaha.

Graham Choo said...

Hahah I know what you mean. Happened to me a few times too. But that usually means that the strings have to be changed anyway :) All the best at learning the song!

ah i'm sure you're tired of me by now but i have one more question about the tuning, just to be sure

e5 standard tuning
B4 standard tuning
F#4 tuned down from G
E4 tuned up from D
E3 tuned down from A?
A3 tuned up from E?

or is the A an A2 (octave lower)
and if it's not.. would it be possible to play it by just keeping the E and A strings the same, just switching around the times you play those strings?

ahah. thanks in advance.

Graham Choo said...

Hey, I don't quite understand what you mean by A2 or A3, or anything with numbers beside them. The A (standard tuned) string is just tuned down to an E note.

You can probably play the song leaving the last 2 strings as they are. Haven't tried it before, because I just followed what I saw from another person playing it on YouTube. All the best!

ah. well all the numbers do is reference which octave that note is as compared to a standard piano. so.. lower numbers mean lower octaves and such. XD might as well teach you something since you put up so many tutorials. thanks again

Wow! This sounds so nice! Somehow, you look different here compared to your other videos but your playing is superb...
